FORMING has transformed a weathered outbuilding into a refined compact home, driven by a deep commitment to self-reliance and artisanal craftsmanship. This project is defined by a "handmade" approach: from the exterior timber harvested from the clients’ own forest to the meticulously restored interiors, as much as possible was sourced, crafted, or reclaimed rather than simply purchased.

The space feels like an illusion of fading and freedom, whilst subtle details quietly ask for attention.”
The original structure was preserved, while the height was extended to create a second level. At its heart lies an open staircase: floating wooden steps on a metal frame, connecting kitchen and living room, and leading up to a gallery with views across the space and into the bedroom. Everything remains open and fluid in its transitions.
While the house maintains a modest footprint, it defies its physical boundaries through a deliberate openness. The east-south facing facade has been reimagined as an expansive glass front, flooding the interior with natural light and dissolving the barrier between the living space and the surrounding greenery. This transparent aperture provides seamless access to the balcony, inviting the outdoors in and creating an illusion of boundless space that far exceeds the home's actual square footage.

Inside, the volume breathes through a newly gained verticality. A sculptural, floating staircase -composed of timber treads on a minimalist steel frame - acts as the house’s spine, elegantly bridging the communal kitchen with the airy gallery above. The design remains deeply connected to its origins: the original structural beams have been meticulously reintegrated as exposed elements. Their surfaces, having developed a deep chestnut-toned patina over the last sixty years, serve as a warm, anchoring force within the color and material concept.

The interior palette is a study in restrained contrast. Cool concrete floors and soft grey plasterwork provide a muted canvas for bespoke craftsmanship. FORMING’s signature precision is visible in the dialogue between the monolithic solid-wood washbasin and refurbished heritage pieces. Every object tells a story of continuity: a coffee table crafted from salvaged original beams sits alongside a vintage GS195 sofa by Gianni Songia and restored Thonet chairs, blending mid-century sophistication with raw, honest textures.
Cabo House is a space where architecture steps back to let the materials speak, creating a residence that feels both profoundly modern and timelessly grounded.
